Megaplex nearly sold out on rooms.

Just a reminder that as of today there are only roughly 10 rooms left for Megaplex. Once the block fills, there are no extra rooms to add as there has been in the past. If you are planning to book, you need to do it now, as there are no overflow options set up. In past years, when the hotel industry was in it's recession, we were able to get rooms right up to a week or two before the con. This will not be the case this year. So hurry!

Posted via LiveJournal app for iPad.

Help bring "Julie Bunny Must Die" to Megaplex

A KickStarter page has been started to bring Ned Wilkinson (aka Rhubarb the Bear)'s musical "Julie Bunny Must Die" to Megaplex. You can help support the musical and the convention by backing the project:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/944621019/julie-bunny-must-die

Since its debut at the 2010 Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival, Ned Wilkinson's "Julie Bunny Must Die!" has been delighting audiences from Florida to Missouri and Oklahoma... and that's about it. So far. Featuring an expanded script and even more songs, Julie Bunny is ready to make her professional feature-length debut on July 28, 2012 at Megaplex XI, Florida's furry arts and entertainment convention, followed by a full theatrical run in Orlando, FL later in the summer.

Your generous assistance will be used to hire the actors and pay for the various technical and promotional costs associated with producing a full-length musical, allowing us to present our show as professionally as possible and, hopefully, attract the attention of producers who can and will take us to the next level and beyond.

Thanks for your support!

Hotel room blocks explained.

People are asking me why I tell them to book a room in our block, if the hotel is 100% sold..

Lemme explain the scenario of how conventions room blocks work.

When a con decides to use a hotel, the promise the hotel that they will fill a certain amount of hotel rooms each night during the event. So here is an example of what happens..

Lets say hotel has 2000 rooms.

Con groups promised to sell 500 rooms.

Hotel marks 500 of those rooms as "reserved" to the event, even tho they don't have anyone actually booked into them..

The hotel then books 1600 rooms to other vacationers. "overselling" is common practice, just like on airlines, as they usually bet on people cancelling their reservations, which based on their histories, they make educated guesses on how many rooms they can over sell.. They usually do ok, sometimes they under estimate. If they underestimate, they usually end up moving guests to sister hotels, etc..

So in the case of Megaplex right now, we have our "500" rooms reserved to the group. Currently for example, we might have 400 of those rooms booked with people, leaving us with 100 left. If we don't book all of those by June 26, the hotel will put them back in the rack to apply to other vacationers. In the past years, we have sold more rooms then our block had set aside, so the hotel simply added rooms from the rack, which were unsold due to low occupancy.

The case this year, is when we fill every room in our block, there are no more rooms outside of the block to pick from.

Megaplex Hotel Soon Sold Out

Just got word from the hotel that unlike previous years where economy has made for empty hotels, this is not the case this year. The megaplex hotel is currently booked 100%+ for the months of June and July. They contracted for sporting events, and have hit 100%. What this means is that once our little block of rooms is sold out, there will be no more rooms available at the hotel. Our room block is filling up. If you are planning on staying at the MP hotel, You need to book your room ASAP, or you may not be able to get one.

Information on the hotel: https://my.megaplexcon.org/hotel

See you in July!

MEGAPLEX CHARITY AUCTION - Call for Donations

Once again this year, Megaplex is pleased and honoured to have The C.A.R.E. Foundation as our charity. Based in Apopka, Florida, C.A.R.E. "is a non-profit 501(c)3 that provides permanent sanctuary primarily for non-releasable wildlife" (from their website, http://www.thecarefoundation.org/).

As in past years, our friends at C.A.R.E. are scheduled for a special presentation Saturday afternoon, allowing our membership to meet some of the many animals they have rescued. After the presentation, we will be holding our annual Charity Auction...and that's where you come in!

We're looking for artwork, memorabilia, collectables, and other merchandise that can be auctioned off to raise money for C.A.R.E. 100% of all sales go to the charity. Help us make a difference by donating what you can!

All Charity Auction questions should be sent to carlfox@megaplexcon.org.

A couple of rules :

1) All merchandise needs to be in sellable condition - clean, in good shape, all parts included, etc.
2) As the charity auction is an all-member event, all merchandise should be 'safe-for-work'. Basically, if you would need to drop a warning on it when posting to an art site, we'd have to decline it. (If you want to run something by me to see if it's okay, send me an e-mail.)

So, how to donate? Glad you asked...

1) We recommend bringing your donation with you to the convention, at which time you can drop it off at Registration or Con Ops. We'll have those locations identified on-site. Please try to get your donation to us on Friday, so we have time to determine what items will be auctioned in what order.
2) If you would like us to display what you're donating ahead of time (especially as pertains to artwork), please contact me at the e-mail address above. We'll be happy to post photos and artwork on our Facebook and/or FurAffinity accounts.
3) If you cannot attend Megaplex this year, but would still like to donate merchandise, send me an e-mail to verify what address to send it to. Note, any mail-in donations must be received by Friday, July 20th (one week before the convention) for logistical reasons.

Of course, if you cannot join us this year, but still would like to help, contact C.A.R.E. directly at http://www.thecarefoundation.org. They'll really appreciate it!

If you have any Charity Auction questions not mentioned here, please drop me a line, and thank you for your help!

Megaplex 2012 - Turn Back the Gears

https://my.megaplexcon.org/

is looking for arts!

Are you a steampunk artist? If you would like to submit furry, steampunk, or general artwork to Megaplex for use within the conbook (which all attendees are able to obtain!) or on posters (which we will decorate the halls with - think about it - you submit art, we print it out in a large poster format, and then you can get it off the wall at the end of the con come closing time! Win Win!) or even on the website (which will be available to anybody)!

If you're interested, send a message or even send the artwork in question to
mp-art@megaplexcon.org. And try to make it to Megaplex 2012: Turn Back the Gears down in sunny Orlando, FL on July 27-29th, 2012!

See ya there!

-Blitz Kangaroo

Message from the Chairman - MP2011 redux

Hello everyone.

*GAME OVER*

All our tokens have been played, and our high scrore has been entered. The Retro Arcade has closed its doors, and we hope that everyone had a lot of fun. This was a remarkable year for us, and on behalf of the entire staff, I'd like to thank each and every one of you for making this our most successful Megaplex convention to date. I could really go around and name each and every staffer who was at the convention for all their devotion and effort...because it really was a group effort. I do need to give a special thank you to our wonderful Guest of Honor, Mr. Chad Krueger. His artwork, and his contributions to our programming were really magnificent, and we could not have had the successful convention that we did without him.

Most importantly, I would like to thank the most important people of the convention: the attendees. Truly, you are the stars of the weekend. You make the magic happen. Our staff is a conduit for the events, but you create the fun. Each of you kept the energy levels high and the fun just kept powering up over the course of the weekend.

Now don't think that the fun has to end...just because MP2011 has ended, the planning has begun in earnest for MP2012. Our theme for next year is "Turn Back the Gears"...a Steampunk theme. Plus, it will be Megaplex's 10th anniversary! So we have some fun things planned that will recall some of our favorite moments and themes from the last 10 years. Our art department is already buzzing with ideas and concepts to make next year a super duper shiny year with hall theming. And if you think that is something...we just got a preliminary confirmation about next year's Guest of Honor. We are going to wait until some preliminary art is ready for the grand unveiling. But it's someone you won't want to miss!

So everyone, thanks again for the best Megaplex we've ever had, and here's to the upcoming Megaplex...which we hope will be even better! Thanks to everyone, and we look forward to seeing you back in 2012 for some Furry fun in the Florida sun!

KP

Megaplex Convention Co-Chairman

Megaplex Retro Arcade: Achievements Unlocked!

At Megaplex last week we gave out some fun little "Achievement" badges for various arbitrary accomplishments. For the most part folks were awarded these by surprise...kind of like unlocking actual achievements in a video game. :P

For the curious, here are the different types of achievements furries unlocked at Megaplex 2011!

Helping Hound - Volunteer at Megaplex 10 for at least 8 hours.
Cuddle Cluster - Join a FurPile at Megaplex in fursuit.
Plays Well With Others - Show Megaplex 10 how lively and animated a bouncy critter can be!
Almost Comprehensible - Demonstrate fine skill in fursuit communication.
Iron Fursuiter - Spend so much time in fursuit that nobody can tell if you ever take it off.
Fuzzy Cheese - Make a creative pose for a fursuit photo.
Caterwauler - Be one of the first to sing at Karaoke
Foxtrot - Show off your dancing prowess at an evening dance
Endless Energy - Be seen dancing after 2 A.M. (This was tough to give out since our dances ended around 1 or 1:30. Amazingly, I caught a fursuiter dancing at 2:01am in the lobby one night. This achievement also went to someone dancing in a room party I wandered into. *grins*)
Critter Contender - Winning team in the fursuit games
Early Bird - First in line at door reg Friday morning
Press Start - Be in the right place, at the right time. Welcome to Megaplex!
Virtual Virtuoso - Megaplex 10 Rock Band tournament champion (not sure who was awarded this one. Must have been tricky since we didn't have a Rock Band tourney!)
Deep Pockets - You won this achievement in the charity auction. Thanks for supporting C.A.R.E.!
Whiskered Warrior - Megaplex Retro Arcade tournament champion
I AM TOTALLY AWESOME - Complete the Megaplex 10 scavenger hunt (More about this in my personal journal)
"I Touch Blitz" - Part of a joke from the Funday Pawpet Show, Blitz gave this achievement to whoever poked him the most.
Sweatiest Fursuiter - Caution! Wet floor!

Props to TailBiter and Zeke Husky for winning the unlisted secret achievement, I guess. :P Those were fun to hand out.

These all seemed to be a big hit, though they were all very rare. Next year expect to see a lot more hall prizes! As always, questions and suggestions are welcome. Feel free to leave a comment here or email mp-feedback@megaplexcon.org.

Congrats to all the achievement winners! :)

Videos and pictures?

Does anyone have any videos or pictures of the late night fursuit games yesterday night? Specifically of me, wearing Ashes, the silver fox partial with the HUGE stompy paws, and when I knocked over all the cones during the baseball spin game. x3 I really want to see what happened from an outside view!

I'll be uploading all my pictures and videos to photobucket and youtube, and I'll edit the links in later ^^

I had soooo much fun this year. It was my first year suiting, and my second time being at megaplex. Definitely well worth it.
As I said earlier to some friends about suiting, I feel like I belong finally. My anxiety disappears completely, and I can be my true, silly self and not feel scared. I love acting around like that and it's a real thrill. :3
